Event Hosted by the SCLC

Press Conference at 7:00 PM (ET)

ATLANTA – Top officials from the Ukrainian Society of the Red Cross are visiting Atlanta over the next two days to appeal for humanitarian support for the citizens of the war-torn nation.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is hosting Mykola Polishchuk, president of the Red Cross in Ukraine, and a delegation of international religious leaders. Polishchuk at the invitation of Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., president, and CEO of the SCLC, will hold a press conference this evening (Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 7:00 PM ET), to provide information about the emergency need in the Ukraine, which includes medicine, food and other essential supplies as well as financial assistance.

The visit to Atlanta is part of a weeklong cross-country tour by Ukrainian Red Cross officials, who arrived in New York on Sunday. Dr. Steele met with the Ukrainian leaders in New York and has been traveling with them in the Northeast. From New York, they met with religious leaders and government officials in several Connecticut cities before departing earlier today to Atlanta. On Thursday, the Ukraine officials head to Los Angeles before returning on Sunday to Ukraine.

‘We see and hear 30-second sound bites of the devastation and suffering in Ukraine, but this evening we are presenting a first-hand account of the need,” Dr. Steele said.

Pastor Slavik Radchuck of Kyiv, Ukraine, who is on the tour and serves as Polishchuk’s interpreter, said the Red Cross is crucial to delivering humanitarian relief to those who need help

.

“God is blessing us through our work with them to get supplies into very difficult areas,” said Radchuck, whose organization oversees dozens of orphanages and hundreds of churches in Ukraine.  His organization also invited Dr. Steele to the Ukraine and Russia a decade ago. “We cannot get into these areas, but they can.”

Since the start of the full-scale war, the Red Cross in Ukraine has delivered tons of 5 418 tons of humanitarian aid to all of Ukraine, assisting nearly 83,000 people during the evacuation and serving 950,000 individuals. Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24th, International officials say Russia has lost more than 27, 500 soldiers, while the estimated loss of Ukraine soldiers is between 2,500 to 3,000. An estimated 3,575 Ukrainian civilians have been killed.
