SCLC PRESIDENT STEELE DELIVERS “NEVER GIVE UP” TALK TO DETROIT CITY COUNCIL

President Dr. Charles Steele Jr. went to speak to the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016.  He was met by the Detroit SCLC Chapter as he entered City Hall. Upon the prayer commencing the Council session, Steele spoke to Council members about the history and legacy of the Detroit middle class. He stated his mission to stand by the City and all those impacted by the recent incidents involving the Flint River crisis.  In particular, Steele talked about the children of Detroit and Flint, and the impact of their tragic academic underachievement.

Receiving resounding applause for encouraging the Council to “Never give up!”, Steele assured he would be returning soon to work inside the Michigan State Legislature.  Steele left the Detroit City Council for a live interview on Detroit’s urban news talk radio station WCHB.  In his interview,  SCLC’s President shared with Detroit listeners what the SCLC is doing in the 21st century.  He also spoke in detail about the role SCLC is looking to play in their plight.

Steele also met with Darnell Earley, Detroit Public School’s Emergency Manager, to discuss in person the situation unfolding with the children and citizens of Flint, and the long-term impact for both Flint and Detroit public schools.

One of the outcomes of the President’s trip to Detroit is the planning of a launch of the Poor People’s Campaign in Detroit/Flint in the near future.
